Match Made in Venice: Tadao Ando and Zeng Fanzhi
  + stars: | 2024-04-15 | by ( Andrew Maerkle | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
An American institution sponsors an exhibition by a Chinese artist in collaboration with a Japanese architect at a centuries-old Venetian building. This is the kind of far-flung constellation that can only come together during the Venice Biennale, when the historic Italian lagoon city turns into contemporary art’s grandest stage. While the Biennale itself is famed for its national pavilions, scores of collateral exhibitions, some organized independently, proliferate. Ando sculpts intricate yet airy interiors, enlivened by dramatic voids or unexpected lightwells, out of slabs of concrete. And the matchmaker is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, which is sponsoring a collaborative exhibition in the impressive space of the Scuola Grande della Misericordia in the Cannaregio district of Venice.

CNN —After losing the number one spot to Bangkok in 2023, Tokyo has reclaimed its crown as the city with the top eatery in the region at the annual Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, which were announced in Seoul, South Korea on Tuesday evening. The list – part of the global “World’s 50 Best” brand – is compiled by the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, which is made up of more than 300 food critics, writers, chefs and restaurateurs, all selected for their knowledge of Asia’s restaurant scene. Though Singapore didn’t have any restaurants in the top five, nine of its venues made the top 50 list – more than any other city. Courtesy The World's 50 BestThe “Asia’s Best Female Chef” award went to Pichaya ‘Pam’ Soontornyanakij, owner of Bangkok restaurant Potong, which came in at 17 on this year’s list. CNN —Armani… Bulgari… Versace…The list reads like the directory of a designer shopping mall. It has more luxury branded residences than anywhere else in the world, knocking South Florida, the sector’s longstanding leader, off the top spot last year. On average, branded residences command a 30% premium compared to similar-quality properties in the same location. The deposits for off-plan purchases can often amount to more than $1 million for prime real estate. “There is a big appetite from both buyers as well as the developers, to continue with branded residences,” said Piro.

Teen suicide: Study identifies behavioral risk factor
  + stars: | 2024-01-25 | by ( Kristen Rogers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
But you should pay more attention since social withdrawal could signal something deeper is going on, a new study has found. Across the globe, 10% to 20% of adolescents experience suicidal thoughts, and suicide is one of the leading causes of death among them, highlighting the need for strengthened prevention efforts. But the current study examined the associations between the long-term trajectory of multiple categories of psychological and behavioral symptoms and suicidal thoughts. But the link between social withdrawal and suicidal thoughts could be explained by the “loss of protective social connections,” according to the study. “If you hear a lot of complaints about aches and pains, it doesn’t (automatically) mean your child is suicidal,” Willard said.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z, no strangers to flashy real estate deals, reportedly upgraded from their $88 million mansion in Bel Air, Calif., to a $200 million Malibu property last month, officially erasing the line between going big and going home. The sale marks the most expensive residential real estate deal in California history — but not the most expensive in American history. That would be the $238 million sale in January 2019 of an unfinished penthouse on Central Park South, in Manhattan, to the billionaire hedge fund tycoon Kenneth C. Griffin. Still, California can claim 10 of the 20 most expensive property sales ever in the United States, according to data compiled by Jonathan Miller of Miller Samuel appraisals. Beyoncé and Jay-Z, who have bought and sold multimillion-dollar homes in Miami, New Orleans and the Hamptons, are now in a rarefied club of celebrities who own properties worth $100 million or more.

The Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival began this week with Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry,” starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, and ends on May 27 with a new Pixar film, “Elemental.” In between, there will be many screenings, many awkward standing ovations, many awards bestowed. Wes Anderson also has a new one, “Asteroid City,” about a junior stargazing convention. It features many members of the Andersonian repertory — Jason Schwartzman, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody and others. In “Firebrand,” from the Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, Alicia Vikander plays Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law. Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose film “Shoplifters” won the Palme d’Or in 2018, has a new film, “Monster.” It stars Sakura Ando from “Shoplifters,” and the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who died last month, did the score.

REUTERS/Sarah MeyssonnierCANNES, May 18 (Reuters) - Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda said he did not want to focus on sexual identity in portraying the relationship between the two schoolboys at the centre of his latest film, "Monster." "The age that these children are at is an age where their sexual identity is maybe not fully... they're not fully aware of it at this stage," Kore-eda told Reuters on Thursday, the day after the movie's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Earlier Thursday, Kore-eda told journalists he did not think the story should be viewed as portraying two boys who have growing feelings for each other, as suggested in some reviews. For "Monster" Kore-eda once again teamed up with Sakura Ando, who starred in his 2018 Palmes d' Or winner "Shoplifters," and who portrays Saori in the new film.
Japan's Kore-eda angles for second Cannes win with 'Monster'

CANNES, May 17 (Reuters) - Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda hopes to repeat his success at the Cannes Film Festival, five years after winning the top prize, with "Monster," which breaks down the misunderstandings between a single mother and a teacher started by two schoolboys. "Monster" sees Kore-eda once again team up with actor Sakura Ando, who starred in his 2018 Palme d'Or winner "Shoplifters." The film is Kore-eda's second in competition since winning the top prize at Cannes, after his Korean-language entry "Broker" lost out last year to "Triangle of Sadness" by Swedish director and this year's Cannes jury president Ruben Ostlund. Kore-eda also brought Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto on board to compose a soundtrack critics praised as particularly moving. Kore-eda and his cast took to the red carpet at Cannes on Wednesday night for the premiere of their film, which critics praised for its clever structure and atmospheric setting.
